Kome is the new sake bar and eatery in the city you need to know

Joining the exceptional eateries within the Commercial Bay One Queen dining precinct is Kome, a vibrant new sake bar and eatery that marries Japanese culinary tradition with the vibrancy of New Zealand’s produce to offer a novel dining experience.

Kome’s founders bring together a diverse culinary skillset and years of collective expertise, united by a shared desire to craft memorable dining experiences, and a joint passion for the art of sake. “Drawing from the essence of rice, our aim is to offer an innovative dining experience centred around sake and inventive dishes that showcase a harmony of flavours,” Kome’s co-founders tell me.

On the drinks menu, Hiro Kawahara — seasoned sommelier and director of Somm Cellars, has led the charge, lending his expertise in liquor — from premium Japanese drinks to unique New Zealand wines, sake, and whisky, to create an unmatched offering. Here, quality and creativity reign supreme, and as such, you’ll find an extensive sake list alongside inventive cocktails and a curated wine list, all of which will pair perfectly with the exceptional fare on offer.

The space itself has been meticulously crafted in collaboration with the hospitality specialists at Izzard Design, known for their unmatched attention to detail and innovative approach to fit-outs. Working closely with Borntobeafro Limited, Kome’s brand designer, Izzard Design curated a space blending modern elegance with the vibrancy and off-beat style of Japanese Izakaya street culture. Drawing inspiration from the energy of the waterfront spot and Japan’s cultural heritage, the design team worked tirelessly to craft an inviting space that enhances the culinary journey. From sleek furniture to thoughtful lighting, every aspect reflects Kome’s commitment to excellence in creating unforgettable dining experiences.

From the moment you step foot in Kome, you’re immersed in the vibrant culinary culture of Japan — it’s casual yet considered ambience, attentive service, exceptional food and drinks, and warm, inviting atmosphere transporting you to another place and time.
