A short hour north of the city is perhaps one of the country’s most intriguing art galleries, hidden in plain sight on working pastures. Gibbs Farm is an often-undiscovered collection of sculptural art that is usually open to the public by appointment only, meaning that a visit to this curation of significant works is not something many of us get the chance to do. That said, in the name of fundraising for the McCahon House Trust, Gibbs Farm will be once again opening for a day this February, offering a rare opportunity to view the works in person. And given the popularity of previous fundraisers for the artistic trust, you’ll want to book your tickets, stat.
Dismemberment, Site 1 by Anish Kapoor.
After nearly 20 years of curation and creation, Gibbs Farm on the Kaipara harbour is home to many international and New Zealand leading artists. The nature of these works is reflected in the fact that they are commissioned, not simply purchased, allowing the artist to create something that directly responds to its rugged coastal environment. In this alone, it serves as a place for artistic talents to flourish and had resulted in a collection of truly spectacular pieces.
Red Cloud Confrontation in Landscape by Leon van den Eijkel.
Gibbs Farm very generously supports organisations like McCahon House by opening their gates for fundraisers. Set in the former home of Colin McCahon, the Titirangi address is home to a thriving, rotating artist residency. It is inherent that in supporting the McCahon House Trust, we are supporting the next generation of local talent. Here, both art and artists in our country are given the opportunity to flourish, so up-and-coming talent may one day reach the calibre of McCahon’s enduring vision.
Jacob’s Ladder by Gerry Judah.
Seeking to raise all-important funds for this artistic endeavour, the Gibbs Farm visit is a ticketed event, with all proceeds going towards the Trust’s operational costs and extensive education and public programmes. As a non-profit charitable organisation, McCahon House Trust relies on grants, donations, and fundraising initiatives, just like this one. The Gibbs Farm visit is one of their more significant fundraising drives.
This year’s fundraiser will take place on Sunday, 16th February 2025 between 10am and 2pm, and we know that tickets are already highly coveted. Always a popular event, this visit promises new curiosities and excitement, alongside a healthy dose of artistic inspiration. Tickets are essential and can be purchased here.
This February, Kelmarna Farm Dinners return for their seventh year, offering a series of enchanting outdoor dining experiences. For those not familiar with the destination, the Kelmarna Organic Gardens in Herne Bay were established in 1981, and have run as a working model of sustainability in an urban setting since.
This February, seven nights of culinary artistry will see some of Tāmaki Makaurau’s most celebrated chefs — along with a special out-of-town guest — create multi-course menus at the enchanting venue, inspired by the farm’s seasonal produce. Guests will dine at communal tables al fresco, surrounded by the very trees, plants, and flowers that provide the ingredients for their meals.
The series opens with long-time supporter of the farm, Tom Hishon (Kingi, Daily Bread) and Giulio Sturla (Mapu), followed by Giulio’s solo night. Plabita Florence (Forest) continues the tradition with a menu highlighting rare farm ingredients. Newcomers include Georgia van Prehn (Mr Morris) and Michael Hanna (Project Hydrosol), as well as Jono Thevenard (Pici, Ooh-Fa) and Kia Kanuta (ex-Ada), who will present a modern Māori-inspired hangi.
Proceeds from the series will support Kelmarna’s community-focused educational and therapeutic initiatives, with 50% of proceeds from Farm Dinners going straight to the charitable trust.
Kelmarna Farm Dinners will run over seven nights in February on the following dates: Friday 14th: Giulio Sturla and Tom Hishon (6—9pm, four courses) Saturday 15th: Giulio Sturla (6—9pm, four courses) Sunday 16th: Plabita Florence (5pm—9pm, five courses) Tuesday 18th & Wednesday 19th: Georgia van Prehn (6pm—9pm, four courses) Thursday 20th & Friday 21st: Jono Thevenard and Kia Kanuta (6—9pm, hangi. Format TBC)

Soak up the sun in style this year atop a beautifully-crafted beach towel. From Baina’s cult checks to Missoni’s classic vibrant renditions, and a veritable spectrum in between, there are no shortage of options to dry off in style.
Fish and chips is one of those simple pleasures at the core of our Kiwi culture, particularly when enjoyed on the beach (or at least somewhere in the great outdoors). Serving up some seriously gratifying situations, we’ve matched Auckland’s best fish and chip purveyors with the most scenic spots around town to devour them.
Address:200 Jervois Road, Herne Bay Eaten at: Sentinel Beach
Herne Bay’s takeaway joint is the ‘supper’ stop you want in on. Whether it’s the classic order or the tasty tacos with fresh slaw, cart it down to nearby Sentinel Beach for a memorable seaside picnic.
Address:6/64 Gladstone Road, Parnell Eaten at: Judges Bay, Parnell
Get a hit of battered goodness (mind you, we hear the mushy peas are excellent too) at this Gladstone Road pitstop before devouring either in the romance of the Rose Gardens, or the picturesque Judges Bay.
Address:22 Jellicoe Street, Auckland CBD Eaten at: the Tidal Steps
Market Galley heralds sophisticated seafood dishes, such as grilled Big Glory Bay salmon and poached prawns alongside family favourites like beer-battered snapper and salt and pepper squid. Order up and stroll down to the Tidal Steps to take in Auckland’s seaside skyline.
Run by the same family for more than 27 years, this local spot is hugely popular for its fresh fish and burgers, which does mean you should probably phone ahead to order. Take your paper-wrapped bundles to the beach down the path opposite the tennis courts and make the most of a breezy summer evening.
Address:1 Fourth Avenue, Onetangi Beach, Waiheke Island Eaten at:Onetangi Beach or Ki Māha
Ki Māha by Dominique Parat is an artfully designed restaurant with a sun-soaked front deck and panoramic views. Now, the beloved eatery has added a fish & chip menu to the mix for summer. Continuing their commitment to serving sustainably harvested seafood and locally sourced produce, the offering features Waiheke Island oysters, calamari, fish tacos and market fish beer battered, crumbed or grilled — best enjoyed out front on Onetangi Beach.
Address:648b New North Road, Morningside Eaten at:Fowlds Park
There’s something for everyone at hidden, city-fringe gem Tipene’s Takeaways, with a bounty of the freshest catch available, burger buns made daily by a local bakery and house-made sauces. We would recommend trying the mixed portion of chips with both potato and kūmara and (if you’re feeling particularly indulgent), the deep-fried Oreos with cinnamon sugar. Utterly delicious.
Address:151 Oceanview Rd, Oneroa Eaten at: Oneroa Beach, Waiheke
The most dependable takeaway stop on the island happens to be only a stone’s throw from the lovely Oneroa Beach. So get your order in (not forgetting the delicious pineapple fritters) and meander down below to enjoy.
Address:127 West End Road, Westmere Eaten at: Westmere Park
Ranked among the best — as per the various awards noted on the website — if you’re looking for a quiet location to enjoy some classic fish and chips, this seaside suburb’s namesake park is it.
Address:411 Richmond Road, Grey Lynn Eaten at: Grey Lynn Park
This West Lynn local has quickly cemented itself as some of the best takeaways in the postcode. And while we’re told it offers an inspired burger menu, we’ve never been able to resist the classics. Here, the fish is as fresh as it gets (thanks to local supplier Kiwifish), the batter is perfectly crispy, and the chips are just the right amount of chunky. The addition of coleslaw might just be some of the best we’ve had too — so refreshing and delicious. While we’d happily eat these from the comfort of our own backyard, we suggest dusting off a picnic blanket and basking in the sun at nearby Grey Lynn park.
Address:22 The Promenade, Takapuna Eaten at: Takapuna Beach
While there is no shortage of exceptional fish & chipperies in Auckland, another is always welcome — particularly when an eatery as exceptional as Takapuna Beach Cafe is on the tools. To celebrate the longer, warmer days, this go-to eatery has launched a pop-up shop for the summer, serving delicious beachside takeaways all summer long — best enjoyed across the road on Takapuna Beach.
Address:711 Manukau Road, Royal Oak Eaten at: Cornwall Park, Epsom
Renowned for its gluten-free menu (we can vouch for the oysters), stop in to place a generous order before winding your way through Maungakiekie and finding a quiet position in the romantic landscape of Cornwall Park.
Address:22 Jellicoe Street, Auckland CBD Eaten at: Auckland Fish Market
While it might not be traditional fish and chips, we would like to argue that this is a version of the classic that is perfect for when you’re craving something a little different. And really, the offering at Auckland Fish Market’s Lobster & Tap is too divine to pass up. Here, the crown jewel is the Hot Buttered Lobster Roll, which is indeed hot and buttery, and utterly delicious. We’d always suggest getting this as a combo, where the chips are perfectly cooked, and the more virtuous coleslaw and pickle sides are essential additions.
Address:444 Lake Rd, Takapuna Eaten at: Takapuna Beach
The online reviews say everything you need to know about this highly-recommended takeaway joint. Some say it’s “the best on the Shore”. Do what you need to do (they’ll cook anything that’s fresh), and take your bounty to Takapuna Beach to accompany it with that view of Rangitoto.
Now’s the time to feel the wind in our hair and sand between our toes. Get set for beach season with a sun-shielding bucket hat or elevated cap sure to see you through the summer and beyond.

“An ice cream a day” might be our summer mantra, but this frequency can make it necessary to branch out from the typical flavours. From gourmet gelato to classic cones, these are the best scoops in town.
One of our favourite scoops has to be Duck Island’s Salted Caramel & Cacao Crumb flavour, perfectly sweet with a moreish hint of salt, finished with clusters of cacao nib crumbs layered throughout to offer a bit of chew and texture. That said, this ice cream purveyor is known for its innovation, and is always adding exciting new ice-cream treats to its cabinet. From refreshing berry sorbet scoops, to decadent chocolate and caramel variations to a new Christmas Mince Pie iteration that we’ve certainly got our eyes on, Duck Island’s ice creams offer an array of unique flavours. Although, if it’s something different you’re after, Duck Island also offers ice cream sandwiches (the Cookies & Cream is a particular favourite of ours) and ice cream sundaes, complete will all the tasty trimmings.
The Mango Lassi flavour from Miann is a fragrant treat that sees refreshing mango blended with a good hint of cardamon, resulting in what tastes like summer in a cone. Or, if you’re after something slightly more indulgent, the now-famous Mont Blanc gelato, with layers of citrusy lemon curd and matcha sponge topped with matcha gelato and matcha Mont Blanc is an utter showstopper.
Taking nuttiness to a whole new level is Little Lato’s indulgent (and award-winning) Peanut Butter Chocolate flavour. It’s even dairy-free, so plant-based eaters can also enjoy a scoop or two. That said, Little Lato’s Biscoff Cookie Dough is a must-try this summer. This delectable flavour sees Biscoff Cookie Dough gelato loaded with The Vegan Treatory’s Biscoff cookie dough in a match made in heaven. Otherwise, flavours like Banana & Peanut, Crumpet & Golden Syrup, and Espresso Martini await you at this always-creative ice cream outlet.
There is a reason that Island Gelato has expanded well beyond its Waiheke Island beginnings — the flavours here are exceptional. In fact, Island Gelato is one of the most awarded ice cream purveyors in the country, with plenty of creativity and quality at play. Here, find a raft of award-winning flavours like Pineapple Mojito, Strawberry Cashew Cheesecake, Pic’s Peanut Butter Caramel, Spiced Raspberry Vanilla, and so much more.
An absolute institution in Warkworth, Charlies Gelato is the perfect place to pick up a scoop or two before enjoying a stroll around Matakana. The Black Doris Plum Sorbetto is heavenly, but even better when paired with the new Christmas Cherry. You’re welcome.
Operating under the philosophy that ‘normal ice cream is boring’, Giapo is the place to go for something a little less ‘vanilla’. Here, from the cones to the flavours to the toppings, there is no limit to the ice cream makers’ creativity, making it hardly surprising that Giapo is frequently dubbed the best ice cream in Auckland. And while there are a number of showstopping scoops to choose from, the World Famous Hokey Pokey is always a winner.
One for the seasoned sugar fans who want to enjoy their scoops guilt-free, Ben & Jerry’s Chocolatey Love A-Fair flavour was inspired by Tony’s Chocolonely and saw the renowned ice cream purveyors join the chocolatiers’ mission to end modern slavery in cocoa farming. Featuring chocolate ice cream with salted caramel swirls, caramel chunks & sea salt chocolatey chunks made with traceable open-sourced cocoa from Tony’s Open Chain, indulging in creamy goodness has never felt so good.
Left: Penguino. Right: Phil Greig Strawberry Gardens.
Take a trip down memory lane at Browns Bay’s iconic gelato parlour, Penguino — renowned for its deliciously creamy, handmade scoops and tasty flavours that change daily. If you can get your hands on a scoop of the Cotton Candy or the Coconut Choc Chip, you’re in luck.
Heading to Muriwai for a beach day? Stop off in Kumeu at Phil Greig Strawberry Gardens for real fruit ice creams and smoothies. Generously sized even if you order the smallest version, our favourite is always a frozen yoghurt, mixed berry combo.
Of course, summer in the City wouldn’t be the same without a walk along Mission Bay, finished off with a scoop from Movenpick. Our favourite would have to be the classic tiramisu in one of Movenpick’s renowned waffle cones. That said, there are Movenpick locations all around Auckland if you can’t make it out East.
Mad for matcha? Tsujiri has three locations in Auckland and undoubtedly serves the best matcha soft-serves in town. A niche but always very delicious option, very deserving of its place as one of the best ice cream spots in Auckland.
During the long and hot days of summer, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the North Shore, especially when it includes a stroll along Takapuna Beach. This is only made better with a scoop (or two) of gelato from Takapuna Beach Cafe in hand — where you can find flavours like Salted Caramel, Blood Orange, Chocolate Hazelnut and Honeycomb.
An iconic ice cream parlour that offers some of the most beloved, nostalgic Tip Top scoops around, Ollies Burgers & Ice Cream in Royal Oak has been running for 50 years and is still a firm favourite among those looking for a satiating scoop. Proving that you can’t beat the classics, this recognisable corner spot is a summertime must-visit.
Nestled in Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter, Gelatiamo has been crafting award-winning gelatos and sorbets since 2011. Renowned for its pure, authentic flavours, this artisan spot combines premium Italian ingredients with fresh New Zealand produce. Beyond gelato, their onsite pâtissier creates irresistible desserts, from classic tiramisu to French-inspired pâtisserie.
This summer, Giapo brings is bringing its iconic ice cream creations to Wynyard Quarter with the newly-launched Giapo x The Pantry Ice Cream Hut at Park Hyatt Auckland. With five signature flavours to choose from, including Matcha in Coconut and Berry Martini, served right on the water, this limited-time pop-up (open Wednesday — Saturdays all summer) is sure to satisfy all season.
Tucked away in Mount Eden, Pistackio Gelato & Co. delights with award-winning, handcrafted artisanal gelato made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Perfect for locals and visitors alike, each scoop is better than the last, with flavours like Banana & Dolce de Leche, Coconut & Butterscotch, and classic Pistachio on offer.
