Cartier and Partridge Celebrate Timeless Craftsmanship at Parihoa Farm

Nestled against the breathtaking backdrop of Parihoa Farm’s rolling hills and the vast Tasman Sea, Cartier and Partridge Jewellers recently hosted an exclusive evening of luxury, legacy, and craftsmanship. This intimate gathering marked the enduring partnership between these two storied brands and celebrated Cartier’s continued presence in New Zealand, with hints of an Auckland boutique on the horizon.

For over 160 years, both Cartier and Partridge have been synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship and heritage. Their histories, though separated by continents, share striking similarities. James Timothy Partridge and Louis-François Cartier were two ambitious visionaries, driven by an unwavering commitment to beauty and excellence. Each laid the foundation for a brand that would transcend generations. Their legacies continued through a lineage of skilled jewellers, with key figures — Linnaeus Partridge and Louis Cartier — leading their respective families into new eras of innovation and refinement. It is this shared ethos that has made Cartier and Partridge more than just business partners; they are kindred spirits in the pursuit of timeless elegance.

The evening at Parihoa Farm was a seamless blend of sophistication and exclusivity. Guests were treated to a sunset cocktail hour, with glasses raised against a panoramic view of the Tasman Sea. The true centrepiece, however, was an exhibition of Cartier’s most exquisite creations, which included some incredibly special high-jewellery timepieces. Attendees were given a rare opportunity to admire these works of art up close, each piece embodying the brand’s dedication to savoir-faire and artistic excellence.

Cartier Animalière Jewellery Watch

But the highlight of the evening was the presence of legendary actor and vintner Sam Neill, a long-standing Friend of the Maison. Neill, known for his acclaimed acting career as well as his passion for winemaking, was the evening’s exclusive sommelier. His Two Paddocks wines, grown in the pristine vineyards of Central Otago, were carefully selected to complement the evening’s menu, reinforcing the parallel between Cartier’s fine watchmaking and the meticulous craft of winemaking.

long-standing Friend of the Maison, Sam Neill with Denizen editor-in-chief Claire Sullivan-Kraus

Neill’s relationship with Cartier began in 2021 at the ‘Love is All’ event in Sydney, where he joined the Maison in celebrating its icons. Since then, he has continued to deepen his ties with the brand, attending exclusive events and becoming the proud owner of a Cartier Santos and a Tank Louis de Cartier in yellow gold. During his speech at Parihoa Farm, Neill mused on the deeper connection between timepieces and wine, drawing a poignant parallel between the two crafts.

“Cartier has been very kind to me over the years,” he shared. “And I have these watches to prove it. But what really interests me is the quality, the authenticity, and the real story behind them. The Santos was the first wristwatch ever made. Louis-Francois Cartier was close friends with the pilot, Alberto Santos-Dumont, who, in 1903, complained that there was no easy way to read the time while flying. That kind of ingenuity, that kind of human craftsmanship, is something I truly admire.”

Much like the art of horology, winemaking is a delicate balance of precision, patience, and expertise. Neill remarked, “There’s something magical about wine and food, just as there’s something magical about a well-made watch. A watch that winds itself and keeps time forever—how do they do that? That’s extraordinary.”

legendary actor and vintner Sam Neill wearing one of his treasured timepieces — The Cartier Tank

The Cartier Tank, another of Neill’s treasured timepieces, also carries a rich history. Originally designed in 1917 and inspired by the Renault tanks used during World War I, the watch remains one of Cartier’s most enduring designs. “It was created at such an interesting time,” Neill reflected. “The Renault tank wasn’t the most terrifying war machine, but Cartier took inspiration from it and created something rather beautiful. That’s the French way, isn’t it?”

With Cartier’s growing presence in New Zealand, the anticipation of a dedicated Auckland boutique signals a new chapter for the brand. Under the leadership of Frederic Cantyn, Country Manager for Cartier New Zealand, and Thomas Crye, Managing Director for Cartier Oceania, the Maison is set to deepen its relationship with the country’s discerning clientele. The evening also underscored Cartier’s unwavering appreciation for Partridge Jewellers, recognising the family-run business as one of its most treasured partners.

Denizen editor-in-chief Claire Sullivan-Kraus with Cartier’s bell boys

As the night drew to a close, with guests savouring their final sips of Two Paddocks wine and admiring the glistening Cartier creations, one thing was certain: Cartier and Partridge are not merely brands but legacies, built on a foundation of artistry, vision, and an enduring pursuit of excellence. Parihoa Farm served as the perfect setting to honour this shared heritage—where time, much like fine jewellery and wine, is meant to be savoured.

Meet Jacuzzi — the lively new bar & bistro in an iconic spot on Ponsonby Road

When SPQR closed its doors after close to 30 years in business, Aucklanders — clutching onto their fond memories of convivial, champagne-soaked long lunches at the ivy-adorned institution — were left reeling. For nearly three decades, the eatery had represented the glory days of wining and dining, and only a future institution could find a home within its hallowed halls.

Enter: Jacuzzi — a lively new bar and bistro by hospitality duo Bronwyn and Jessica Payne. Known for Elmo’s and Hoppers, the sisters are perfectly primed to usher in a new chapter for 150 Ponsonby Road, as they reimagine the space through a European lens with emphasis on indulgence.

Approaching the ivy-clad terrace, there’s a definite sense of familiarity, while inside, it’s a different story. The reimagined lounge sets the tone with rich, seductive hues, while the iconic copper bar remains a nod to the past. The drinks list is an experience in itself, comprising a playful edit of cocktails, a signature martini menu, and an enviable champagne offering.

On the food front, diners will find a playful approach to culinary techniques from around the world, with a focus on fresh, local produce and vibrant flavours that compliment the drinks on offer.

Adding to the ambience is Derek the Diver, a striking art piece by Timothy Oulton from Dawson & Co. — one of only five in the world — encased in a column of ocean-like textures. The bathrooms, always a talking point, now feature bespoke mosaic murals depicting a mermaid’s underwater embrace and a jungle teeming with wildlife.

Left: Timothy Oulton’s Derek the Diver from Dawson & Co.

Every detail at Jacuzzi has been carefully considered, from the custom-made furniture to the pink and green Patagonia stone tables, European-style outdoor seating, and ‘love seats’ upholstered in a historic flame stitch pattern — each element was chosen with intent, respect for the space’s history, and a touch of irreverence.

“Keeping the copper bar, frontage, and many more elements of this place, while pulling new elements in from our own travels has been a rewarding focus for us to achieve what we believe is a true blend of what our customers will appreciate. We have added a number of recognisable (or even some hidden) fun items in this venue that locals and regulars will be discovering for years to come.”

Jacuzzi officially opens its doors on February 20th, marking a new era for 150 Ponsonby Road.

A significant interior intervention by Chelsea Hing imparts logic and flow on this entertainer’s haven

Interior Design — Chelsea Hing
Stylist — Beck Simon
Photography — Rhiannon Taylor

Set in the historic Australian gold mining town of Bendigo, this contemporary home was deep in the design process when the client brought interior designer Chelsea Hing on board. Engaged to review the existing floor plan and run her creative lens over the home, Hing began by examining its location. Lying on the corner of two busy roads, the interior designer offered a responsive solution that best served the exposed site and the client by turning the focus inwards.

The strategic move is centred around a beautifully appointed entrance. As you step inside, a curved black brick wall guides you into the open receiving room, where a void between the ground floor and a second storey draws in light and life. Here, Hing has set the tone of the home, the fire-lit interior immediately intimate, with dark chocolate timber walls and a pale timber ceiling. Concrete floors, lime-washed walls, richly textured marble and stone add a moody sense of elegance, while jewel-toned furniture and vibrant art prevent it from feeling too formal.

“Hing’s intervention uses materiality to define the domestic spaces, simultaneously imbuing a playful element by hiding doors in wooden walls for an exaggerated sense of escape.”

The home peels off from this central space, feeding into the kitchen, living room, bedrooms, home theatre, and enclosed balcony. Hing’s intervention uses materiality to define the domestic spaces, simultaneously imbuing a playful element by hiding doors in wooden walls for an exaggerated sense of escape. The result is inherently personal, down to the custom-made artwork alcoves that were precisely sized to fit the clients’ paintings.

Though the interior palette revolves around deep, grounded tones, Hing has ensured it doesn’t read too dim by incorporating generous glazing adorned with sheer drapery. Floor-to-ceiling windows feature prominently, and sunken skylights puncture the top storey, welcoming soft shafts of light down into the darker corners and bathrooms. On the ground floor, glazed doors open to the plunge pool, outdoor living area and a manicured garden that wraps around the back of the home.

“Though the interior palette revolves around deep, grounded tones, Hing has ensured it doesn’t read too dim by incorporating generous glazing adorned with sheer drapery.”

Undertaking a design project mid-build is no easy feat, but Chelsea Hing has turned this challenge into an opportunity. By re-examining the floor plan and introducing a fresh aesthetic that blends texture, mood, and visual intrigue, the interior designer has pushed the home to an unexpected and impressive conclusion.

We delve into the life and prolific career of Italian designer Piero Lissoni via some of his most iconic pieces

Milanese architect, art director, and designer Piero Lissoni is one of the true masters of his field. His work, spanning over three decades, has dramatically impacted the world of design — from projects across architecture, landscape, and interiors; products and graphic design, to his art direction for some of the world’s leading brands — from B&B Italia to Boffi, Lissoni is recognised and revered the world over. With a foundational emphasis on designing for human beings above all else, setting himself apart with this individualistic approach, the Italian designer stands up on the world stage as one of the greatest creative minds of his generation. Here, we explore his life and career via some of his most iconic work.

Piero Lissoni was born in the vibrant, design-led city of Milan, Italy, growing up as what he describes as a ‘questioning kid’ — fascinated by reason. He went on to study design at the Politecnico di Milano, soaking up tutelage from masters such as Achille Castiglioni, Aldo Rossi, and Vico Magistretti, before founding Studio Lissoni in 1986. He quickly earned a name for himself with his innovative designs which are known for their sense of rigour and simplicity, capturing the attention of some of the industry’s biggest names. Fast-forward to today, and Lissoni & Partners, now with offices in both Milan and New York, has a thirty-year history of developing international projects spanning the full design spectrum, in addition to being responsible for the art direction for some of the world’s most influential design companies. The practice, still led by Lissoni, combines a range of expertise with a holistic and tailored approach that sets it apart — the resulting projects instantly recognisable for their proportion, elegance, and emphasis on experience.

“[Lissoni] has a thirty-year history of developing international projects… in addition to being responsible for the art direction for some of the world’s most influential design companies.”

Lissoni was recently quoted in an interview saying, “Every project is a new story, a new adventure,” nodding to his unbridled ability to approach any and every project anew, adapting to the client’s specific needs and desires, despite the scale or context. And it’s perhaps this ability to meet people where they are and enhance their daily lives, in a world of so much banality and superficial, aesthetically-led design, that has seen the designer and his practice not only endure, but thrive, for decades.

Lissoni has worked with many of the world’s most prominent design brands, from Boffi to Cassina, Kartell, and Flos, maintaining an experimental and innovative approach to projects that seek to reinvent and reinterpret their subject — rewriting the rules of design.

Here, we look at a handful of the design luminary’s most iconic pieces — a visual representation of a true master at work.

Piero Lissoni’s
Most Iconic Pieces

With a tubular steel or stainless-steel frame for outdoor use, the Frog chair offers versatility in one- or three-seat configurations, making it both a stylish and functional choice for indoor and outdoor spaces alike.

Elevated by a matte black metal base, Mex Low floats effortlessly above the floor — its versatile design, available in various shapes, seamlessly blends elegance with practicality, affording it a
striking yet playful presence.

First introduced in 2008 and evolved through 2022, its soft, yielding cushions invite relaxation, while its versatile, geometric configurations can create both structured and irregular forms. Recently enhanced with integrated storage units, the sofa blends functional utility with a minimalist aesthetic, and remains an iconic example of contemporary, adaptable furniture design.

J’aime has arrived in Auckland, marking a bold new chapter for a beloved pâtisserie

Fifteen years after introducing Christchurch to handcrafted macarons that capture the elegance of a European pâtisserie, J’aime is bringing its signature indulgence to Auckland. Opening its doors at Commercial Bay on Valentine’s Day, the boutique redefines the traditional macaron experience with sleek design and an expansive confectionery selection.

Founded in 2008 by Bridget O’Sullivan, J’aime began as a passion project inspired by her travels through London and Europe. What started as a boutique offering small-batch, exquisitely crafted macarons quickly became a cherished name in New Zealand’s culinary landscape. Now, with designer Denise Morreau joining as a partner, J’aime is stepping into a new era, blending refined technique with bold, contemporary aesthetics.

Summer 25′ Box

Stepping inside the Commercial Bay store, customers will find themselves immersed in a world of colour and craftsmanship. Designed by Morreau in collaboration with MA Architecture Studio, the boutique defies the dainty, pastel-hued expectations of macaron boutiques. Instead, it embraces a confident red-on-red palette, framing each macaron like a work of edible art.

Left: Berries and Cream with raspberries and blueberries folded through with strawberry buttercream. Right: Valentine’s Day gift box

Alongside J’aime’s signature macaron collections, including the much-anticipated Brûlé Macaron, the Auckland store will offer an expanded range of confections and sauces. And while there may be no drinks on the menu, every bite promises a moment of pure indulgence.

Left: Butter Crayons. Right: Brule Macaron

To celebrate its arrival in Auckland, J’aime will host a complimentary macaron tasting on Saturday, February 17th, from 12 — 1pm. Whether you’re a longtime devotee or discovering J’aime for the first time, let this be your invitation to indulge.
