The ASB Classic is always the must-attend event on the summer calendar, and this year is shaping up to be the tournament’s best yet thanks to a host of star-studded matches, combined with all of the off-court action on offer. Adding to the tournament’s international appeal is key sponsor and official vodka partner, Grey Goose, who is bringing a taste of their premium French vodka to the festivities with The Grey Goose Bar, set to be the place to hit refresh post-match.

For those looking for a more premium experience, they’ll find the Grey Goose Bar in the heart of the tournament’s hospitality offering. ‘The Serve’ channels the chic venues of the vodka’s origins, bringing an effortless taste of French glamour to Parnell. Revellers will find themselves in an elevated prime position with a comfortable place to sit while watching the on-court matches from a private screen (drink in hand, of course).

A perfect mix of Grey Goose vodka, tart strawberry liqueur, freshly squeezed lemon and lime, and old-fashioned lemonade — finished with fresh summer strawberries (thoughtfully cut into hearts), the Love One cocktail is set to become a fast-favourite throughout the tournament and beyond. The Tournament

Founded in 1956, Auckland’s ASB Classic is a men’s and women’s tennis tournament that has been around for 67 years. Always set to take place the week before the Australian Open, it has become a popular fixture among prominent international players who see it as the perfect warm-up for the first major Grand Slam of the year. Notable past winners of the ASB Classic include Venus and Serena Williams, Richard Gasquet, John Isner, Jelena Jankovic, Gaël Monfils, David Ferrer and many more. Even Rod Laver won it back in 1961.

Players to Watch

Coco Gauff
The winner of last year’s women’s event, Coco Gauff is returning to Auckland to defend her ASB Classic title. This 19-year-old American wunderkind is now ranked third in the world and promises to bring her powerful style and fierce competitive game to Auckland come January.

Felix Auger-Aliassime
Tapped as a rising star, this 23-year-old French-Canadian player is set to make his Auckland debut at next year’s ASB Classic. He was ranked sixth in the world in 2022, and when he was 18, became the youngest player to make the top 25 in the world since Lleyton Hewitt over two decades ago. Ambitious and driven, Auger-Aliassime is certainly set for big things.

Cameron Norrie
Despite being currently ranked as the number one British player, Cameron Norrie was raised in Auckland. Next year he will return to the tournament that he has credited with having sparked his love for the sport to find a crowd of enthusiastic Kiwi tennis fans, keen to support one of their own.

Caroline Wozniacki
The former world number one is set to return to Auckland for next year’s tournament, marking her eighth time playing in the ASB Classic. Back in 2020, Wozniacki retired after winning 30 singles titles and spending a total of 17 months as the best player in the world, before deciding to pick up her racquet again in August this year. Set to be a major moment for this renowned player, Wozniacki will certainly be one to watch as she enters the ASB Classic with her eye on the prize.

Arthur Fils
This young up-and-coming 19-year-old Frenchman has now risen to 38th the world on the ATP rankings, making him the highest-ranked teenager and currently fifth in the Next Gen (21 years and under) listing. Since turning professional two years ago, Fils has jumped over 600 spots in the world rankings, and more than 200 places this year. One to watch indeed.

Gaël Monfils and Elina Svitolina
Gaël Monfils, the 37-year-old from France and ranked sixth in the world, is one of the most entertaining and enduring tennis players on the planet. Elina Svitolina is ranked number 25 in the world and has won 17 WTA titles along with the Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo 2021. The two players are not only dynamic doubles partners but are also husband and wife, making their on-court game all the more captivating to watch.

Keeping Score from the Stands

Every tennis match starts with all players on zero points, or what is known in the parlance of the sport as, ‘love-love’. First points in a tennis match are initiated by the player serving. Once a successful serve has been returned by the receiver, the two players engage in a back-and-forth rally, which will continue as long as the ball remains within the boundaries of the sidelines and baselines. The ball must not go out, or bounce twice. The player who wins the rally, either by hitting a winning shot or by the fault of his/her opponent, gets the first point, which makes the score 15-0 (said as 15-love). From there, the points proceed in this pattern:
First point — 15
Second Point — 30
Third point — 40

If the players reach 40-40, that is called ‘deuce’. In the case of a deuce, a player must win two consecutive points to win overall. Winning one point after deuce is called ‘advantage,’ but if the second point is lost by the advantaged player, the game returns to deuce. This can go on for a while and is part of the reason why some tennis matches become very exciting to watch.

Caroline Wozniacki playing at the ASB Classic

That is how to win a game. To win a set, a player must win a minimum of six games, ensuring they are two games ahead of their opponent. In a very close match, the game score can get to six all, which triggers a ‘tiebreaker.’ Here, points are counted sequentially from ‘one’, players swap serve every two points and to win, a player must be the first to win a minimum of seven points with a two-point difference.

So, a player must win four points to win a game, a minimum of six games (with a two-game difference) to win a set, and either three sets (in best-of-five matches) or two sets (in best-of-three matches) to win the overall match. Players change ends with every set. In Grand Slams, men’s singles matches are best of five, but in all other ATP tournaments (including the ASB Classic) as well as women’s matches across the board, the matches take on a best-of-three structure. All doubles matches are best of three.

Denizen’s Tennis Etiquette: The dos & don’ts of attending the ASB Classic in partnership with official Champagne sponsor G.H. Mumm

Tennis is an unquestionably elegant sport, and as such, one for civilised spectatorship. Thanks to the elevated nature of tournaments such as the forthcoming ASB Classic, there’s a certain artistry to being an attendee, where whites are encouraged, champagne sipped from flutes, and onlookers expected to maintain a certain sense of decorum not afforded to other sports.

This équilibre is even more pertinent when being hosted by the ASB Classic’s Official Champagne Partner, G.H. Mumm, in the Maison Mumm Marquee where luxury, elegance and joie de vivre collide. Here, attendees can find crisp flutes of Champagne and delicious food to enjoy between riveting matches.

To help you to avoid any unfortunate mishaps, we’ve crafted an extensive list of courtside dos and don’ts for tennis-goers, meaning that all you have to worry about is enjoying yourself on the day with Mumm in hand, cocooned in the comfort of Mumm’s elegant, French-inspired saloon.

01. When getting ready for the tournament…

DO: Channel Kate Middleton in the Royal Box at Wimbledon. Wear something elegant, comfortable and understated. Remember a hat and sunglasses.

DON’T: Wear jandals. In fact, steer clear of beach attire altogether. The grandstand is no place for flip-flops, bikini tops or bare chests.

02. When preparing to be hosted by G.H. Mumm…

DO: Brush up on your wine knowledge, ensuring you’ve mastered the 3 V’s (Vineyard, Varietal, Vintage).

DON’T: Comment on your preference for beer. You’re at the wrong event.

03. Service Time…

DO: Sit straight-backed and cross-legged, with your eyes firmly towards the court. Now is not the time to socialise.

DON’T: Let out a sigh and demand another drink.

04. When it’s a Tie-break…

DO: Lean forward to observe the action from the edge of your seat. Embrace the tension.

DON’T: Yell profanities if your player loses a point.

05. Swapping Ends…

DO: Use this time to excuse yourself to use the facilities.

DON’T: Try to start a Mexican wave.

06. When the ball hits the net…

DO: Inhale dramatically.

DON’T: Proclaim, “It’s N-E-T, not L-E-T!”

07. During the 90-second Break…

DO: Attend to any missed text messages.

DON’T: Use this short reprieve to loudly Facetime your friend and boast about how good your day is.

08. When your player is losing…

DO: Offer the rival’s fans a civilised cheers with your flute of G.H. Mumm.

DON’T: Stomp your foot and storm off in a huff.

09. Really Long Rallies…

DO: Look around once it’s all over and nod in approval to fellow attendees (thus, sorting the wheat from the tennis-watching chaff).

DON’T: Decide that now would be an opportune moment to loudly discuss dinner plans.

10. When it’s an Ace…

DO: Pass a shrewd comment about the importance of maintaining one’s composure.

DON’T: Start heckling the point-losing player.

11. When it’s Deuce…

DO: Humbly observe that “it’s really anyone’s game”.

DON’T: Say, “apple or orange”.

12. When ordering a glass of G.H. Mumm…

DO: Wait for an opportune moment (see: not mid-rally), to visit the Maison Mumm Marquee.

DON’T: Miss your opportunity to visit G.H. Mumm’s luxurious hub of hospitality.

13. When it’s all over…

DO: Find a rival supporter and shake his/her hand saying “fabulous game”.

DON’T: Haughtily smirk at those who supported the losing side.

The ASB Classic will take place at Auckland’s ASB Tennis Centre from the 1st-13th January 2024.

Mexican Fried Chicken Tacos

Serving deliciously authentic tacos and Mexican bites, Loco Bro’s Taqueria opens a second outpost downtown

Chefs Brody Jenkins and Josh Barlow originally bonded over their love for two things: burgers and tacos. And while they first came together to focus on the former (launching Jo Bro’s and slinging epic burgers from their store in Titirangi and food truck), recently, the clever culinary duo have been turning their attention to their other love with Loco Bro’s Taqueria. Here, they started by serving authentic Mexican tacos from a Titirangi taqueria, and have just opened a second outpost in Commercial Bay, bringing their famously flavoursome fare to the inner city.

“When we first started thinking about Loco Bro’s, it was pretty hard to come by really good Mexican food in Auckland,” Jenkins tells me, “so our mission was clear: to create an authentic Mexican kitchen that not only served incredible food but also paid deep respect to the rich culture, history and culinary traditions of Mexico.” Jenkins continues, “We want to serve the kind of food you would find on the streets of Mexico and the off-the-beaten-track spots in the middle of nowhere.”

Left: Beef & Lamb Burrito
Beef & Lamb Birria Taco

As such, the delicious offering at Loco Bro’s pays homage to true Central American flavours and ingredients, where everything is made from scratch and the authentic essence of Mexican cuisine shines through in every bite — from moreish, smoky notes to zesty citrus and just the right amount of spice.

“We offer authentic corn tortillas made by a Mexican father-son duo here in Auckland who own ’Salsa Roja,’ but we also have flour tortillas for those that prefer a soft chewy bite,” Jenkins says, before continuing, “and we’ve made the ordering process as simple as possible: choose your tortilla, choose your flavour, choose your sides, choose your drinks and enjoy.”

At Loco Bro’s, the signature tacos are the Beef & Lamb Birria, which sees whole beef briskets and lamb ribs marinated in housemade birria overnight, then braised for up to five hours in beef and lamb stock that has been made from scratch (a two-day process) as well as guajillo and ancho chillis, cinnamon and whole oranges. The meat is then pulled and served to order. Other tasty taco options include chicken escalada, pork carnitas, Mexican fried chicken, chilli con carne and crispy fish. Hungry punters will also find quesadillas, burritos and rice bowls, served with the same topping options.

Chilaquiles (Nachos)
Right: Beef & Lamb Birria Taco with Dipping Broth

Where sides are concerned, the Chilaquiles is Loco Bro’s’ take on nachos and sees fresh tortilla chips tossed in tomatillo and roja salsa, piled with crema, cotija cheese, pickled onions the additional option of a meat topping, while the Mexican Fried Chicken packs a flavoursome punch. As far as we’re concerned, the Loaded Baked Potato is sure to become a fast favourite, served with cotija cheese, crema and jalapeños.

As for drinks, the highlight is undoubtedly the housemade Agua Frescas, a thirst-quencher that Jenkins assures me is a staple in Mexico. A mixture of fresh fruit puree, soda, lime and fresh mint on ice, these super refreshing and zesty drinks are designed to help wash down the rich and spicy tacos, with Loco Bro’s offering flavours like cucumber and lime, mango and pineapple, and guava and passionfruit.

Jenkins also informs me that there will be a rotating menu of tasty seasonal specials throughout the year, like grilled corn esquites, summer ceviche or barbacoa lamb shanks in winter. There is also a Loco Bro’s food truck available for catering and public and private events.

Located in the bustling food court of Commercial Bay, Loco Bro’s second outpost is sure to draw fans for its fresh, flavourful food and simple approach. With a tagline that encourages us to ‘Eat Real Mexican’, this cool new spot is easy and delicious and is somewhere that every inner city foodie should have on their radar.

The very best new cafes, bakeries & casual bites of 2023

Whether it’s a lazy weekend brunch, a quick but satisfying bite, a tasty takeaway, or a perfectly brewed coffee to kick-start the day, there’s nothing quite like a casual eatery to fill the void. In Auckland, we’re spoilt for choice in this area, and 2023 has seen a host of new openings that only add to the city’s incredible culinary repertoire.

From grab-and-go joints turning out mouthwatering takeout to bakeries that would rival those in France, excellent cafes serving modern reimaginings of the classics, relaxed neighbourhood eateries, cult status pop-ups putting down permanent roots, and much, much more, this year has truly been one for the books.

Here, in no particular order, we’ve rounded up the very best new spots to grab a casual bite in the city.

It’s all simply sublime.

At this cool new Mount Eden spot, you’ll find perfectly brewed coffee and tasty bites served in a laid-back space — the perfect place to park up for a morning brew. The menu is simple, accessible and delicious — a mix of mostly baguettes, sandwiches and scones. At Holiday, they take their coffee very seriously indeed with legendary Woo Hyung Lee (of Camper Coffee) taking the reigns, serving their own specialty roast alongside filter by Norway’s Tim Wendelboe and Korea’s Fritz.

Wheatz Bakery

Wheatz

Location: CBD & Albany

Wheatz Bakery is the tasty new bakery with outposts in both Albany and the CBD specialising in cute little stuffed croissants, petite and perfect Swiss Rolls and a very glorious croissant-doughnut hybrid that looks like a stack of hot waffles. Here, your pastries can (and should) be washed down with something from the expansive drinks menu — such as bubble tea, fresh fruit tea, drinkable yoghurt and sweet iced lattes, among all the usual caffeinated suspects.

Pilar

Pilar

Location: Ponsonby

Having recently opened on Ponsonby Road, Pilar Cafe & Eatery is a relaxed spot serving perfectly roasted Rocket coffee, friendly service and unique daytime fare that marries Asian-fusion flavours with classic European brunch. The result is a must-try cafe that puts an unexpected twist on those dishes that are perfect for a lazy weekend breakfast or a quick before-work bite — the fluffy blueberry pancake served with bacon and red-wine poached pear is just one example, and a must when visting.

Cafe Perch

Cafe Perch

Those who find themselves in need of a caffeine hit like clockwork would do well to discover Cafe Perch, the Freemans Bay cafe catering to all of our workday needs. Conveniently found in an enlarged, foyer-style space on Hargreaves Street, this destination is the perfect addition for anyone in the area, whether for a coffee on the fly, a fresh sandwich for lunch, or a place to perch for a while in the middle of a busy workday. When Denizen visited, the cabinets were stocked with delicious Chicken Caesar Wraps, Korean Chicken Sandos and Veggie Pides, as well as some fresh toasties, frittatas and slices — offering something to suit any taste or need.

Sandringham-based neighbourhood coffee spot Everyday Coffee opened its doors back in June and fast became a favourite amongst locals. Here, expertly-brewed coffee currently takes precedence; baristas serve fresh Allpress coffee, and an ever-changing filter brew is always on offer and a favourite amongst regulars. Alongside a counter of Daily Bread pastries and doughnuts, Everyday now offers a full bagel service (and having had a taste ourselves, we can attest to the fact that these are seriously good).

Queenies Caffé & Vino

Queenies Caffé & Vino

Location: Freemans Bay

With new owners, a fresh space and a new evening offering, Queenies returned this year, better than ever before. From its verdant exterior to its sun-soaked tables to its intimate vibe, this is about as charming a neighbourhood spot as you could imagine, and as well as beautifully reimagining the daytime menu, the pair has introduced an evening service, transforming the bustling cafe into an elegant wine bar — a perfect spot to park up for an after-work wine or a post-dinner drink and dessert.

Having taken over the iconic corner spot on Jervois Road that once housed Jess’ Underground Kitchen, Honey Sundays is a delightful drop-in serving perfectly brewed Allpress coffee and tasty cabinet treats (from local producers), as well as offering a selection of impressive surfboards, surf wax and wetsuit-style swimwear. It is a unique but appealing hybrid — easy brunch spot meets laid-back retail space — with the vision behind Honey Sundays being to not only create a cool, cruisy cafe for locals, but also, to have a place in the City where surfers could find boards and wax without having to venture to a mall (a need she discovered after falling in love for the wave-chasing sport herself). Superb.

Manis

Manis

Location: Ponsonby

Those with a penchant for something sweet have likely already discovered Ponsonby’s Manis, the unique bakery concept where Paris and Bali collide. Manis, translating to ‘sweet’ in the owners’ native Indonesian tongue, is a tasty collision of cultures, offering traditional Balinese pastries like martabak (a sweet pancake) and pie susu (a sweet milk tart) alongside French viennoiserie — including a number of variations on the classic croissant. There are also plenty more savoury pastry options (from pain au pesto and salami croissants to mouthwatering, filled house made rolls) — perfect for anyone seeking a wholesome workday lunch.

The Butcher Baker

The Butcher Baker

Location: Helensville

If you’ve found yourself in Helensville of late, you might have stumbled upon The Butcher Baker — a true farm-to-table style restaurant harnessing the best of locally-grown and foraged produce. Drawing on his tenure at local institutions like Honey Bones and Odettes, as well as his experience in some of the world’s biggest culinary hubs, owner Reginaldo Richard set out to create something of his very own that offers locals and those coming from further afield something unique. Here, the menu centres on the very best seasonal produce, sourced from local suppliers and foraged by Richard himself, cooked in new and innovative ways. The result is some seriously spectacular flavours, served in a laid-back but decidedly cool setting the whole family can enjoy.

Baby G founder, American-born Cam Blanchard, is widely credited as serving some of the best burgers in Auckland courtesy of his signature, American-style smash patties (boasting unbelievably crispy edges and a thick, flavoursome centre), sitting between pillowy soft buns, with fuss-free fillings — usually a combination of American cheese, onions, pickles, mustard, mayo and/or hot sauce. You’ll find these, plus a concise edit of Baby G hits on the menu — with something for the veggies too.

Broke Boy Taco

Broke Boy Taco

Here, the space is pared-back and charming with hand-painted signs and virtually no decor, while the menu is similarly fuss-free, with Yarbrough’s signature tacos at the forefront. For those who aren’t familiar with birria, it’s a type of meat stew that is a mainstay of Mexican cuisine, made by marinating beef in adobo sauce before its cooked slowly in broth until mouthwateringly tender and full of flavour — and Yarbrough’s is as good as it gets.

The offering is simple but undeniably delicious — and fried chicken, unsurprisingly, informs every meal. Your first look inside The Burr Bar — Ayrburn’s quietly luxurious watering hole

For those seeking an intimate, cosy and quietly luxurious space where refuge is taken and senses are soothed, paradise is found at The Burr Bar — an impossibly quaint watering hole nested in the centre of Ayrburn‘s sprawling hospitality precinct on the outskirts of Arrowtown.

Here, the past and present collide; wander through the impeccably manicured grounds before reaching a stone farm cottage where weathered, timber-framed windows are set in a stacked stone facade — the roof a sheet of rugged corrugated steel; the front door a hinged barn gate. Inside, you’ll find stone walls adorned with metal and wooden shelving packed with all manner of libations, sumptuous leather and timber banquette seating, and a pitched roof of heavy exposed beams.

When it comes to the all-important list of libations, the inventive cocktail menu nods to the site’s heritage with a number of tipples themed for a country garden setting. Our order? ‘An Ode to Adrian’, where Ayrburn Noble Riesling is paired with vodka, crème d’apricot, blood orange tea and a hint of fresh lemon, and ‘The Green Lady’, which is the perfect mix of savoury and tart, muddling lemon-infused gin and limoncello with fresh citrus and basil, resulting in the perfect summer satiation.

Elsewhere on the menu, an extensive list of wines is largely focused on Ayrburn’s very own vintages; spanning everything from textural whites to brooding reds, fruit-forward rosé, rich late harvests, sparkling, and everything in between. Alongside this, you’ll find a small selection of international wines available, as well as a concise beer list, barrelled spirits, and The Burr Bar’s signature non-alcoholic iced tea, made with fresh herbs from the surrounding gardens.

Of course, given Ayrburn’s impeccable culinary team, the food is utterly divine — expertly crafted to pair with the drinks on offer. From classic beef tartare with Bloody Mary dressing and crisp potato, to lamb and pork meatballs with shaved Grana Padang, green olive, anchovy and guindilla pepper gildas, crisp artichoke with romesco, pickled shallots and cheddar, and much, much more, here, there’s something to compliment anything you opt to imbibe.

From its refined interior to its carefully curated, thoughtful drinks offering to the impeccable menu that speaks to our local landscape, The Burr Bar is everything a bar should be — inviting, intimate and incredibly well-appointed. There’s no better spot to kick back, relax, and celebrate the year that’s been (and the one ahead).

Everything you need to know about SPF ahead of the hot summer months & shop our editors’ sunscreen picks

The single most important product for skin protection, anti-ageing and longevity is SPF, having long proven its potency and protective capabilities against the sun’s harsh rays. With summer firmly on the horizon, now is as valuable time as any to reflect on the virtues of sun protection, regardless of whether you love to soak up the summer rays or prefer to remain safely in the shade.

This season, when choosing the right sunscreen for you, look to our line-up of exceptional options for something that protects your skin without clogging it and gives you an enviable glow in the process.

With the efficacy of sunscreen is so grounded in its scientific accomplishments, it’s no surprise that most of us lack an in-depth understanding of exactly why it’s such an essential aspect of our daily routine. Few dermatologists refute SPFs role in a skincare regimen, but there’s still a lot of confusion surrounding which to use when, often leaving us with more questions than answers. Here, we delve deeper on the subject in a bid to educate on this beauty essential

SPF is short for sun protection factor, and at its most basic, is a unit of measurement for exactly how much a product will act as a shield for your skin. Regular SPF use significantly reduces your risk of squamous cell carcinomas and melanoma. And while exposure to the sun initially seems like the easiest way to achieve a golden glow, over time it leads to pigmentation, sagging skin and wrinkles. Billion-dollar beauty industry aside, a simple SPF is our most powerful tool to maintain a youthful visage, no question.

While you’re right in thinking everyone needs a few minutes a day of unimpeded sunshine to maintain healthy vitamin D levels (20 minutes is ideal), SPF is simply considered a filter, determining how much UV-A and UV-B light our skin can absorb. The higher the SPF, the tighter the filter. Ideally, for days spent outdoors, most dermatologists wouldn’t recommend anything less than SPF30+ — to future-proof your face. And while there is a misconception that an SPF of this calibre requires a thick, comedogenic formula that can clog up the pores; finding the right formulation for your skin is easy — if you know what you’re looking for.

Those prone to oily skin will do well with a lightweight formula like Mecca’s SPF50+ Brightening Sun Serum. For dryer textures, hydrating ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid will further moisturise the skin and keep any dry patches from seeping up the sun protection. For those with sensitive skin, steering away from a chemical SPF in favour of a mineral option rich in natural zinc oxide can limit the chance of irritation (coincidentally, zinc is an excellent mineral for supporting skin health and addressing any bacteria-related acne). But with that in mind, a chemical formulation doesn’t always necessarily mean irritating — and in some instances, these ingredients can aid in the healing process.

If possible, avoid 2-in-1 products where the SPF is included but isn’t the main event. Although they might be an easy reach, (and if they’re the only way to get protection on your skin, go for it), using a separate moisturiser and sunscreen is ideal. Basically, you want your moisturiser to sink into your skin, where the nutrients can be absorbed before applying your sunscreen about five minutes later, allowing it to sit as a protective layer on top (this also eliminates the chance of comedogenic breakouts, too). It’s also incredibly rare to find multi-purpose products that offer full-spectrum sun protection. Something to definitely keep in mind.

Instead, what you should be looking for on a label is broad-spectrum, water-resistant, and SPF30-50+ (but 15+ will suffice if you’re spending the day inside). These essential considerations will give you a foolproof face for wherever your summer day activities may take you.

And while we’d love a sunscreen that lasts all day, reapplication is an essential but often forgotten step for successful SPF use. So, the question becomes, how do you reapply sunscreen throughout the day if you’re wearing makeup? It’s as simple as spraying it on with a mist. Not only will this act as a refreshing midday dose of moisture (essential for anyone seeking solace from the office aircon), it will ensure that your sun protection remains replenished for an afternoon of activities.

It may seem like a laborious process, particularly given the amount of time we spend splashing around in the water over summer. But a few decades down the track, you’ll thank yourself for the commitment.

The team behind Spiga has just opened a delicious new steakhouse in Remuera — meet Manzo

For Remuera residents and those in the surrounding areas, the 1050 Remuera precinct has become a bustling hub of retail and hospitality, and it just keeps getting better. Case in point: the recent opening of Manzo, a delicious new steakhouse by Fabrizio and Taryne Napolitano, the clever duo behind Spiga and Spiga Pantry.

Manzo (located directly next to Spiga) is a modern, elegant steakhouse with international appeal, inspired by the iconic steakhouses that Fabrizio and Taryne had experienced in places like New York and elsewhere on their extensive culinary travels. “We wanted it to look and feel welcoming, warm and elegant,” Taryne tells me, “Somewhere you could come for an occasion or a burger or an alfresco drink and snack.” She continues, “Think New York/Italian traditional steakhouse with a slightly more modern cuisine.”

Left: Wagyu Petite Slider. Right: Grissini with carpaccio and truffle dressing

Here, of course, New Zealand meat takes centre stage. “We dry age all our Wagyu and Black Angus beef in-house,” Taryne tells me, “and we source it from small, family-run New Zealand farms with a focus on premium quality.” Indeed, quality is at the heart of Manzo’s offering, where the meat adheres to high standards of ethical and sustainable practices and Fabrizio has devised a slew of delicious ways to serve the various cuts to harness their flavourful potential. There is also wild-caught fish on the menu, as well as a raft of delectable sides and even a few tasty vegetarian options for good measure.

Left: Scampi Roll with celery and bisque gel. Right: Manzo’s dining room

Standout starters include the Manzo Tartare with egg yolk sauce, Agria chips and Kiwi Onion Dip dressing (the latter, a captivating, Kiwi-Italian take on the classic and something that Taryne tells me Fabrizio makes entirely from scratch). There are also the Wagyu petite sliders made with goat’s cheese and Ponderosa lemon sauce, a delicate scampi roll served with celery and bisque gel, as well as a flavoursome prawn terrine with Ajo Blanco, nduja vinaigrette and fennel.

Those seeking a substantial main will find it among Manzo’s mouthwatering line-up, which includes the epic Manzo Cheeseburger, comprising a Wagyu patty with piccalilli mayo, comté, pickles, tomato and lettuce and served with fries, an Alpine Merino Lamb Cotolette served with hazelnut, mint, baby lettuce and artichoke salsa verde, and a ‘Handpicked’ Landsdown Farm Eye Fillet with funghi hollandaise and Tora Collective Kina.

Left: ‘Handpicked’ Eye Fillet with funghi hollandaise and Tora Collective Kina.

There is also a substantial offering of Wagyu cuts for those with seriously carnivorous tastes, where the meats’ marble scores are between four and eight (depending on the cut) and every piece is aged for a minimum of 28 days. Here, diners can indulge in beeswax-aged Black Origin Scotch Fillet, dry-aged Black Origin Sirloin, wet-aged Black Origin Bavette or a one-kilogram dry-aged Black Origin T-Bone (made for two people to share). They can also add tasty extras like bone marrow butter with pancetta and coriander or truffle egg with paprika and spring onion to their order to take the meat to the next level, as well as selecting a few of Manzo’s stellar sides. These include local kumara with truffle caviar and creme fraiche, smooth potato mash, a green leafy salad and potato skin lyonnaise with guanciale and shallot.

Left: Prawn Terrine with ajo blanco, nduja vinaigrette and fennel

The wine list, curated by Dhall and Nash and Sapori Wines, is over 100-strong and offers drops from around the world. “We have decided to keep our high-end wines close to retail prices, in order to make them more accessible,” Taryne tells me. “We want Manzo to become something of a destination for wine connoisseurs,” she continues, “and our cocktails have all been designed to come out quickly.” Said cocktails include both a grenache and a barrel-aged negroni, a classic martini and a grapefruit Americano. Delicious.

Manzo’s dining room

Inside, Manzo is a cool, cosy space where a decidedly classy vibe prevails. Designed in collaboration with Pieter Wilkinson, the interior’s walls are covered in photographic and artistic collages to lend depth and dimension, while curtains and reeded glass panels provide a sense of intimacy and warmth. There is even a beautifully appointed event space upstairs with a private bar, perfect for any kind of soiree or special get-together.

From its chic interior to its exceptional menu and food that truly showcases the best of New Zealand ingredients in a unique way, Manzo is a new opening that should certainly be on your radar. Open now for lunch and dinner, it’s the ideal spot to celebrate the imminent end of the year.
