Switch up your usual with the best new openings of 2019 so far

The first half of the year has flown by and Auckland has already been treated to a number of stellar new openings. From tasty cafes to all-day eateries to lively bars, this year has served up an array of gastronomic treats, each leaving their own mark on this city’s already impressive dining scene. If you’re looking to try something new but don’t know where to start, here are some of our favourite new openings of 2019 so far. If you haven’t yet paid them a visit, now is the time.

Duck Island Ice Cream
Prior to Duck Island opening its first Auckland store on Ponsonby Road, it wasn’t out of the ordinary for Aucklanders to drive down to Hamilton for a couple of scoops of the delicious ice cream. No matter the weather, there is always a line outside the pastel-hued parlour and when you experience Duck Island’s flavours, it’s easy to see why. With a selection that is creative and sophisticated but that still captures the nostalgic magic of the icy treat, the options range from classics like cookie dough to more inventive combinations like strawberry miso cornflake and fairy bread.

Wise Boys Burgers
In 2015, brothers Luke and Tim Burrows took to the streets of Auckland with their food truck and delivered unprecedented vegan burgers that totally dominated the dining scene. Four years later, the brothers have opened their first permanent burger joint in Grey Lynn and so far, it’s carried on the success of the truck and then some. Constantly packed with patrons, you don’t have to be vegan to enjoy a burger from Wise Boys as its plant-based patties have been crafted to provide maximum flavour and its housemade vegan aioli is as tasty as its conventional counterpart. The ultimate Wise Boys hack is to order a side of onion rings and add them to whatever burger you order, for a beastly creation.

Cheese on Toast
Another food truck that recently made its long-awaited transition to a permanent store is Cheese on Toast, formerly known as Guerilla Grill. Now, with its larger kitchen space, owners Stephen Kennedy and Yang Yang have expanded its menu to include a selection of delectable toasts with toppings, fresh loaves of sourdough and sweet treats, like Yang Yang’s decadent chocolate fudge brownies. The new spot is located on the outskirts of Mt. Eden, and the locals of the area have already labelled Cheese on Toast a ‘go-to’ — as it never fails them.

Soho
From the chefs behind popular Newmarket cafe, Billy, came this new Thai restaurant located in Takapuna’s The Goodside precinct. With its menu showcasing modern renditions of traditional Thai cuisine, Soho immediately captured our heats for its delicate, authentic flavours and hearty dishes. Head Chef, Jenny Hongthong (originally from Thailand) whips up dishes like massaman curry with lamb and kumara and one of the best pad Thai in Auckland. Recently Soho has expanded its offering into breakfast, during which it offers unique dishes like coconut kaya jam French toast.

Clipper
Having travelled the world, participating in beverage-making competitions and representing Bacardi as ambassadors, mixologists Barney Toy and James Millar decided to put some roots down in Auckland, and took over the space of what was previously Mea Culpa on Ponsonby Road. The drinks menu is vast and varied, going beyond simply quenching patrons’ thirst and focusing on unique flavour combinations and modern takes on classic cocktails. The Pan Am cocktail is definitely one of our favourites on the menu but it’s the flat white martini that has us returning to the bar more often than we should.

The Churchill
This bar is, in our opinion, one of the most exciting new additions to Auckland this year, and is the highest rooftop bar the city has ever seen. Located on the 20th floor of the recently refurbished Four Points Sheraton on Queen Street, The Churchill offers unprecedented urban views, as well as a selection of champagne and gin that is second to none. Lofty drops like Pol Roger (Winston Churchill’s champagne of choice) are served on The Churchill’s champagne cart, while the gin selection totals over 160 bottles. With food that measures up to the standard of drinks, The Churchill’s menu showcases the likes of Kingfish sashimi, beef eye fillet tataki and salmon tartare, to name a few.

Ozone Coffee Roasters
This all-day Grey Lynn eatery is one of our favourite new openings this year. From its premium roasted coffee, to its top-notch food to the warm and welcoming ambience it creates, Ozone Coffee Roasters can do no wrong. Whether it’s for a quick takeaway coffee, family brunch or dinner with friends, Ozone really is able to cater to any and all occasions. The daytime menu showcases the best of local, seasonal produce and the evening menu includes wood-fired pizzas that are loaded with tasty toppings. Our pick is the Capricciosa which comprises ham, smoked mushroom, artichoke, kalamata and hen’s egg.

Lily Eatery
Although Lily opened back in January, we certainly haven’t forgotten about the Devonport gem as its tasty food and friendly environment definitely left a lasting impression. The menu exceeds the usual cafe fare and offers more sophisticated and creative dishes such as market fish and asparagus gnocchi but it’s the sweet treats that steal the show. The custard loaf with its buttery biscuit, sweet medley of fruity freshness and rich custard cream is divine and was, as the Owner/Head Chef Lily Ng told us at the time, her “favourite”. Recently, however, Ng has created a new, tiramisu dessert loaf with rum-soaked espresso sponge cake and mascarpone — and apparently it’s even better.

The Sydney Update: 7 hotspots that are making us want to book a flight

Despite the fact that Auckland’s burgeoning dining scene is forever keeping us on our toes — with this year’s openings alone being noteworthy enough — there’s something that can be said for hopping the ditch and exploring new tastes across the pond. From a non-traditional Izakaya to a French-style cocktail bar, these are all of the Sydney hotspots making us want to book a plane right now.

Ciccia Bella
Hearts were broken when beloved restaurant Acme — known for its wildly inventive but always delicious takes on pasta — closed its doors in June. But fans shouldn’t have feared, because the exemplary cooking from chef and owner Mitch Orr isn’t going anywhere. Soon enough, Orr will be bringing his talents to the kitchen of Bondi restaurant Da Orazio, working alongside Maurice Terzini to transform the place into Ciccia Bella: an Italian inspired restaurant that will be dishing out expertly crafted pizzas and a selective few plates of pasta. (NB: fans of Acme’s acclaimed pig’s head macaroni dish can find new love in Ciccia Bella’s modern variation: Pig’s head carbonara pizza.) Opening dates are still yet to be confirmed, so this is one we suggest you keep your eye on.

Scout
Located above The Dolphin Hotel and requiring a secret code to enter, Scout is a hidden gem. Conceived by Matt Whiley, whose bar of the same name in London is renowned for its uniquely bizarre drinks, the acclaimed mixologist is approaching his antipodean outpost with the same experimental philosophy. Boasting a menu of unexpected concoctions made with seasonal (sometimes foraged) ingredients, and an interior that feels appropriately moody for a tucked-away space, Scout is promising an experience unlike anything else.

Alberto’s Lounge
From the team behind Restaurant Hubert (The Swillhouse Group) comes a venue that was touted as one of last year’s most highly-anticipated openings — Alberto’s Lounge. Established as a casual Italian trattoria with timber-laden interiors that combine 70s sensibilities with a cosy, modern edge, this new, Surry Hills hotspot is positioning itself as the perfect place to drop into, whether after a couple of drinks or for a leisurely dinner. The mixing of old- and new-school continues on the menu, where classic Italian dishes are treated to a contemporary Australian twist. On the drinks side, the global approach sees a delicious line-up of international wines and crowd-favourite cocktails.

Mary’s Underground
Located below popular CBD haunt Mary’s Circular Quay, known for its penchant for 90s music and juicy meat burgers, lies its basement sister, Mary’s Underground. In an unlikely but entirely gratifying setup, the new dinner-and-a-show type space combines all the liveliness of a Jazz club with the fare of a fine-dining institute. As the brass and drum players deliver their beats, guests can tuck into a plethora of delicious plates, like classically served lobster or steak frites, dry-aged duck or duck liver parfait.

Bar Topa
Tapas restaurants are frequent, but places that do tapas well are few and far between — especially in Sydney. Case in point of why Bar Topa, found in hospitality giant Merivale’s IVY complex, is already causing quite a stir. The quaint spot is reminiscent of a traditional Spanish pintxo bar — only accommodating 40 standing diners at any given time — and serves no-fuss tapas, like ham-stuffed crispy croquettes, succulent chicken skewers, grilled broccolini and whipped salted cod. Designed to be a place where you stay for a good time but not a long time, Bar Topa makes for the perfect drinks-and-nibbles pitstop before you venture out into town.

Bar Topa

Little Felix
Similarly found in the IVY is newcomer Little Felix, due to open on the 9th August. The polished, French-style cocktail bar will be a younger sibling of nearby French bistro Felix, so you can expect the same tangible, moody atmosphere but with more of a focus on drinks than food. Come for the crisp glasses of champagne, and the cocktails inspired by early 20th-century Parisian hotels, stay for the delicate and delicious charcuterie and truffle tartine.

Isabel Bondi
Putting a modernistic spin on the traditional Japanese tavern is new city opening Isabel Bondi: an Izakaya but not quite as you know it. Given that the place is owned and ran by award-winning mixologist Kate McGraw, it should come as no surprise that the drinks list is nothing short of exquisite — comprising delectable cocktails and a gloriously extensive sake list. Throw that together with sparkling water views and a short but sweet classic menu (think fried chicken and pulled pork katsu bun) and it seems this spots allure is going to be around for the long-haul.

Creating cutting-edge lighting in unique materials Apparatus is a design brand to know

In 2018, Apparatus opened the doors to its Los Angeles showroom, a space where textural, raw materials and creamy soft furnishings provide a compelling backdrop to Apparatus’ brassy, monochromatic lighting. As the third outpost for the burgeoning brand, the opening marked its snowballing popularity. Founded in New York in 2012 by Gabriel Hendifar (creative director) with his partner (in life and in business) Jeremy Anderson, Apparatus examines historical and cultural design motifs through the lens of a contemporary context, producing products that are more like pieces of art in that they’re considered holistically — blurring the line between form and function to the point of it becoming almost indistinguishable.

The duo is renowned for approaching their work with creative gusto, each year redesigning their Chelsea showroom to represent a new ‘Act,’ and marking the change with a hotly-anticipated disco held during New York Design Week. For Hendifar and Anderson, it’s all part of an overarching philosophy that sees the designs for Apparatus evolve according to the duo’s own, internal barometers — rather than the prevailing trends (which is what makes the pieces so universally compelling).

Sensuality and narrative lie at the heart of Apparatus’ designs, where tactile materials like marble, horsehair, suede, brass, porcelain and lacquer are handmade into the brand’s sculptural, contemporary lighting and furniture and assembled on site in New York. That everything is developed, made and displayed in the same, historic building gives Apparatus an autonomy that contributes hugely to its distinctive identity.

Now available locally at ECC, Apparatus’ carefully considered materials and meticulous construction will cast your interiors in a whole new light.

Dance For Abilities will present New Zealand’s first intellectually disabled fashion show at NZFW

If you don’t know about the work that Dance For Abilities does, it’s a charity that seeks to create inclusive, fun spaces in which people with disabilities can cut loose a little, have a dance and express themselves. Started by brothers Jonathan and Daniel Hopkirk who saw little opportunity for their sister with Down syndrome to go out in the same way they did, Dance For Abilities has facilitated a number of highly-popular social events both here and in Australia.

Now, DFA is looking beyond its typical format to host a fashion show at the upcoming New Zealand Fashion Week. Living Colour will be the first fashion show in New Zealand, in fact, to be entirely comprised of models with intellectual disabilities. “We are really excited to get the opportunity to open another door for people with intellectual disabilities,” Daniel Hopkirk says. “Our teams’ goal is to continually evolve [Dance For Abilities] and create equal opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to have a night out in these fantastic locations and events around Auckland.”

Set to see the models dressed in designs from some of New Zealand’s most renowned names in fashion, including Zambesi, the Living Colour fashion show will be a lively affair, with judges Dame Pieter Stewart and Zambesi’s Liz Findlay on hand to distribute prizes for the best dancers, the best dressed guests and the best moves on the catwalk.

Whether it’s fashion or the Dance For Abilities cause that is close to your heart, this event is gearing up to be something everyone can enjoy, and will be the perfect note to end fashion week on.

Given that Dance For Abilities is a charity, the team needs to raise $10,000 to be able to put the show on and cover the 350 guests they are expecting on the day. One donation of $35 will cover food, drinks and entertainment for one guest, and can be made here. For more information about this event and how to support it, click here.
